As part of our local geography block, the 4th grade had a field trip to the Tall Ship Providence, a historic sloop located in Old Town Alexandria.
From the beginning of the tour, our guide remained fully in character, saluting and welcoming the new crewmates aboard. After a brief explanation of the crew’s rules, we began our journey into life aboard a Continental Navy ship.
The children learned how the ship was navigated using a sextant and compass, and they eagerly shared their own knowledge on the topic. Their excitement and curiosity brought great energy to the experience.
We were then led to the captain’s quarters, where we were given a glimpse into daily life in the Continental Navy and learned about the history of the ship itself. The students also explored the work required aboard the vessel and were given the chance to try the pulley systems. They experienced firsthand how effortless heavy lifting can become and learned about the physics that made it possible.
Later, we explored how boats float through a hands-on lesson in buoyancy. The children were provided materials to build their own small boats, which they eagerly assembled and tested in the water. Each boat was proudly given a name, and the children cheered as they competed to see whose vessel would stay afloat the longest.
The field trip was a beautiful opportunity for the 4th grade to weave together their classroom learning with lived experience. What had once been stories, lessons, and diagrams became something tangible they could see, touch, and experience for themselves. Through this journey aboard the Providence, the children were able to build a living bridge between their studies and the wider world around them.
