Reflections from a Fifth Grade Teacher

A cherished tradition in the Waldorf grades school is the Year Review, a retrospective journey that begins with the most recent lessons and traces a path back to the very first day of school. In the fifth grade, this practice takes on a profound significance; the class does not simply revisit the current year, but travels all the way back through the grades to their earliest beginnings in the first grade.

This experience offers a moving testament to how deeply the Waldorf curriculum is received by the children. As the class moves through their lesson books, the discussion becomes a shared pilgrimage down memory lane, revealing which stories and concepts truly touched their hearts. Each lesson is brought back to life, enriched by the fact that every child’s memory is slightly different. Because Waldorf teachers carefully prepare lessons to meet the specific temperaments of the students, this review allows the class to relive a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences—the trips, adventures, mishaps, and laughter that defined their time together. By the fifth grade, the students have developed the maturity to offer and receive constructive reflection, allowing them to witness firsthand their own immense growth and hard work at PCWS.

For the teacher, this particular review is bittersweet. It is a moment of immense pride in the children's development, shadowed by the quiet realization that the time has come for them to embark on their next adventure.

Though the daily rhythm of the classroom eventually ends, the teacher carries the class in their heart forever. In the Waldorf tradition, the teacher often becomes a "second mother," viewing and caring for the students with the same devotion one holds for their own children. Teachers share in the students' triumphs, worries, and joys as if they were their own. Whether they remain in constant contact or years pass in silence, the bond remains indelible. Frequently, it is the unexpected call or letter from a former student years later that serves as a beautiful reminder of this enduring connection. Leave a comment or share this post today.
